Tutorial ::: Converting a Photo into an Oil Painting
In this 4-step photoshop tutorial, you will learn how to convert an ordinary photograph into an oil painting. This effect looks sharp and works well with most photographs, depending how bright the images are. This is a pretty cool effect. I’ve applied it to lots of my images.

The Oil Painting Effect:
Step 1:

The first step in creating the Oil Painting Effect tutorial, is to apply the following filter:
Filter » Distort » Glass
Apply The Following Settings:
• Distortion: 1 • Smoothness: 4 • Texture: Canvas • Scaling: 85%
Step 2:

Personally, I think the image looks good the way it is now, but we will continue to add more filters to it. Next Go:
Filter » Artistic » Paint Daubs
Apply The Following Settings:
• Brush Size: 3 • Sharpness: 3 • Brush Type: Simple
Step 3:

Already it’s starting to look like an oil painting. The next step in the oil painting effect is to add brush strokes. Go:
Filter » Brush Strokes » Angled Strokes
Apply The Following Settings:
• Direction Balance: 20 • Stroke Length: 5 • Sharpness: 1
Step 4:

The last step in your oil painting, is to add the texture, which allows it to appear that your painting was done on canvas. To do this, we’re going to go:
Filter » Texture » Texturizer
Apply The Following Settings:
• Texture: Canvas • Scaling: 75% • Relief: 3 • Light Direction: Top Right
In this photoshop tutorial, you have learned how to convert a photograph into an oil painting. The settings are what I used for this example, so tweaking them slightly may give you a better image in the end. Also, I have chosen to use a bright image, but this effect will work well with various types of photographs.
