I just got back from a weeklong vacation in Cancun, Mexico. It was great! We had an awesome time. We definitely took advantage of the “All-Inclusive” part of our stay, as well as get to know the bartender’s at the “pool bar” pretty well.
Not too long before we left for Cancun, I started getting more active on my YouTube account. I like to surf around and find good videos, in order to submit them to digg and the various other social media sites. Because I have this account, I figured I should at least put some kind of content on the profile. Which was one of the primary reasons I wanted a Flip.
While I was in Cancun, I set up my Flip Video Camera, and recorded a LONG video of the Lagoon in Cancun. We stayed on the 6th Floor of the Oasis Hotel, so we had a pretty nice view of the lagoon. I didn’t have a tripod, so I had to make the equivalent out of what we had in the room. I ended putting a patio chair on top of a glass table. Then stacked a layer of books, set of domino’s, a box of wheat thins, & then two container’s of nuts. Check out this crazy tripod setup I had going.
I ended up capturing 90 minutes of film. So I just condensed that down to 60 seconds. The below video is what ended up coming out. The quality of the flip isn’t too great, but it’s still pretty cool to watch all the boats & waverunners in the lagoon. My timelapse from Cancun.
Timelapse: 90 Minutes in Cancun (in 60 seconds)
I’m pretty excited about it, because it’s my first REAL video-editing project.
Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?
UPDATE - 06/09/2008:
I just wanted to quickly update this post. I also submitted my timelapse video to digg, and it almost hit the Front Page. Ended with 178 diggs & 17 comments. But never popped. I’m thinking of submitting it to Reddit tomorrow, but probably won’t. We’ll see.
The amount of views on the YouTube video itself, is currently sitting at 817. It’s received 2 comments, and was rated 3 stars, after 13 ratings..
That is all. Comment away…

Nice work… i’d love to know what program you used for this. I’ve always wanted to create a timelapse similar to the one you’ve created here… Maybe you should write a tutorial about it, I’ve noticed a couple of tutorials on your site.
Simply awesome. I would like to see it without the cars and boats though. The water and the clouds are my favorite part and a film location from a secluded area would be amazing.
Woah! How’d you do that???
Both the water and the sky looks very smooth. I like the look of it thank you for sharing.
Very nice timelapse video!
That’s a cool video. Just add your URL at the start of the video’s description to get some traffic to your site from youtube. How you added title to the video?
Great video, Jack Johnson is perfect to with any shots of the beach haha. I agree with Mario that I love the clouds also everyone doing uturns is fun to try and catch. Thanks for the video.
Cancun is simply irresistible place and I want to go there again and again. Nice video!
that’s a pretty sweet timelapse video of cancun.. It looks like a nice place to take a vacation.
Nice peaceful music
Little reply to Mario - I prefer seeing car/sboats etc I think it’s because I’m more technology orientated ^^
i LOVE time lapse photography. You should check out a flick called Baraka, it has some of the most amazing time laps photos. Down town Tokyo, Grand Central Station NY, Moving stars in the high desert in Utah, just stunning images.
I have been all over Mexico but yet to experience Cancun. I better have a video camera by then.
Looking forward to seeing more.
Most impressive, especially with that tripod set up, lol. Does the Flip cam come with video editing software that you condensed it with? I don’t do anything with video, but it looks really cool.
I really like this timelapse video! I’ve always wanted to create a nice timelapse, because i live near a freeway…. is it easy to do? i have a video camera but never attempted anything like this!!!
(nice tripod, by the way)
Amazing timelapse video!!!
Cool timelapse video of cancun, you’re sure to make a great filmmaker! I love it!
Mario is right. If you put this camera facing the water only the video would be even more amazing. But it is good right now.
That was a great timelapse video. I really like how the water looks as the boats pass over. It looks really neat, thanks for sharing.
Well you know I couldn’t decide whether to watch the clouds, the boats, the birds, the traffic or the coaches that stopped for a short while! There’s something really soothing about watching life go by like that - you feel as though you are in your own time and space and everything is going on around you as normal…
Cheers.
Awesome vid, it is like being there, and as I write from dry, smoldering Las Vegas a visit to Cancun sounds mighty nice!
Love the time-condensed video idea… it was actually pretty peaceful and calming to watch. Good improvisation with the tripod setup :). Sometimes it’s not the end product that’s as interesting as the process of getting shot in the first place.
Now to think of an excuse to create my own time-lapse video!
Ya, that’s a great idea. But what made me watch till the end of the clip was the music being used in the video. What is it?
That was a pretty cool video. Makes me wanna create one myself. How difficult is it to do?
Looks like a beautiful place to vacation. I liked the time lapse and the music was nice too. BTW, love the site design
